the Obsession Chronicles

"may you live all the days of your life"

the story wanting to be told

yes, i'm still obsessed, still delighted with the fellowship * i wish i could play you my current favorite song: Dom & Elijah singing a happy jibberish song called Half Fling but Billy's a good hobbit laugh too -- o man, speaking of, can you imagine how big those too-blue eyes got for his, er, night on the town? (are you watching that status bar?) *
the Two Towers has been on all week & i'm not even ashamed to say that i've tuned in more than once (the only movie i've seen on tv that drew me away was 25th Hour -- what a beginning! you do have to see this one from the very start, a tribute to New York & another pair of towers) * it's on right now & i keep running in to watch my favorite scenes (o that smile Pippin gives the discouraged but still joking Merry -- "i think we might've made a mistake leaving the shire" he says -- when the orcs have 'em * he gets a big fond smile in response, despite the fact that the orcs are fighting over whether they need their legs or not -- what spirit! you'll see how much i adore him down below) *
speaking of favorite scenes, they put up 2 of mine on my favorite website so now i can hear another great Merry line as often as i like ("you smoke too much, Pip" he says with such a big ol' lost love as they're separated -- by Pippin's foolishness, of course * i repeat that one to my own Pippin all the time although "why'd you have to look Pip? why do you always have to look?" is gaining in popularity with a little word substitution: mine chews, eats & bites) * that's "something for the road" & my other favorite is "is there any hope?" where Gandalf shows he forgives him for being a fool (takes one to know one) *
i'm hoping to go on & on some more about this obsession (like how last night when i watched Two Towers all the way through & realized that even Gollum would've been true, would've been Smeagol, if Frodo hadn't betrayed him * or how it is so clear that Peter Jackson loves every one of the characters in this story, as did Tolkien) but right now i'm tired & i've got to get to work early in the morning *

making lists: about this page

last updated 10 January 2004
the stunning movie The Pillow Book is the inspiration for this ever-evolving page of lists * there are lots of links mixed in on my lists -- if i could find a good link on any item, i included it * some links go straight to Amazon.com or the IMDb but watch that bottom status bar because there are some other great links hidden in there * if you're interested in a little history, follow the story behind this page on the one that came before it, otherwise, click on for more rambling words and lists of beloved things -- is that an oxymoron?
the lists below may look the same but they change every time i update the page * not all of them every time, but all of them over time * as it's a new year i'm going to give them another thorough going over, keep my mind moving on to new obsessions, even though i don't completely let go of the old ones *
the 2 spots at top i'll keep -- they're always changing & besides, they please me (i'm the only audience for these pages for all i know, so why not?) * my horrorscope: i'm a woo-woo type, part pagan, so why not revel in it? & the hotties in the movies: what's life without some tasty crushes? i try to keep the list short, but when i really fall for somebody it's usually because of a generous genuine nature & then i never want to take him&her off my list * like Viggo, like Salma * i saw the elvin Cate Blanchett on Inside the Actors Studio & wow... she said "It has to be a generous act" about really giving herself to a performance emotionally, going all out as she does * the generosity of creative expression is one of my favorite concepts, the one i've begun the last 2 years with (see Viggo for last year, & Brezsny for this) * see, it's all connected *

my horrorscope this week
(for the week of 29 January 2004):
I suggest you deal creatively with budding tension between you and your allies. Maybe you could convince them to get down on the floor with you and tussle like puppies. Or how about organizing a game of paintball? Gather together in someone's backyard and throw rocks at dishes, bottles, and old TVs. Sneak a boombox into an abandoned building and have a guerrilla dance party. Or stage a Lying Contest in which everyone competes to tell the most outrageous whoppers. Any one of these strategies will go far towards ensuring the success of joint ventures in the coming weeks.

angel cards i just drew:

how am i doing?
funny he should mention puppies -- i had mine help me pick my angel cards (the first 2 he politely nosed, the last he just about choked on) *

to begin with a theme
(for the week of 1 January 2004):
I saw my Aries friend Alexis yesterday. "You're even more festive than the last time I saw you," I told her. She had on red silk pants, a burgundy cashmere sweater, silver scarf, black snakeskin boots, and beaded black tunic. I noticed several new piercings and a Hindu-style red dot on her forehead just above her eyes. She also happened to be carrying her snake, which was wrapped around her arm. "The older I get, the freer I am to hide nothing about how I really feel," she replied. "It's not even rebellion any more -- it's generosity. I have this sense that the world needs me to express my most extravagant self." I nominate Alexis to be your patron saint in 2004, Aries.

random moments i'll never forget:
  • watching Return of the Jedi in Mexico & laughing over the subtitle "Jabba el Hut"
  • leaving the Townsville bus station on Christmas day 1989 for a 36 hour drive through the Aussie desert to Darwin
  • the boat ride to Taveuni, Fiji & then the bus ride across the island, a journey i've done twice so far
  • taking my cat Bob (a girl of course) for a walk down to the beach in Caspar
  • singing revolutionary songs & drinking rum at night with the boys in the park in Santo Tomás
  • lovely tango dances with a patient, sweet boy in Yuba City
  • the earthquakes
  • Barcelona, all of it
  • watching Mars & all those stars sparkle above Smith Rock out the window of my truck the very first night i slept in it
  • sitting on the balcony of a brewpub in Port Townsend reading the paper (about the young Kennedy crashing his plane) with the Sound spread out before us
  • the last M's game i went to

"I believe in God, only I spell it Nature."
-- Frank Lloyd Wright

my answers to those questions he always asks on Inside the Actors Studio are as follows (today):
  • my most favorite word is loyalty
  • my least favorite word is abandon
  • what turns me on is a delight in the everyday
  • what turns me off is one who is self-absorbed
  • a sound i love is a hobbit jibberish song (thank you Dom & Elijah!)
  • a sound i hate is an alarm clock
  • my favorite curse word, well... i'll just say i'm with Cate & Kate (the word is not unlike their names)
  • a profession other than my own that i would love to try is photography
  • a profession i would hate to try is being a waitress -- i'd be terrible
  • if i end up at the pearly gates & there is a god to greet me, i would want her to say, "who do you want to see first?"

animal friends:
i got my puppy! my new best friend is a sweetie of a black lab pup & he's named, of course, for my favorite little drunk turned hero, Pippin * he's a fool, but so is Gandalf & if you care to get me started, ask me how Middle Earth would've fallen if it weren't for Pip *

sayings i live by:
not all boys grow up to be men *
ain't nothin' like the real thing baby *
just because something is possible
doesn't mean you get to have it *
home sweet home *
fake it till you make it *
we're all connected *
all things in moderation *
embrace the dark side *
use it or lose it *
love it or leave it *
the answer's usually both *
nobody's just anybody *
regrettin' shit is a waste of time *
i'd rather regret som'm i did than som'm i didn't *
one door never closes without another one opening *
there are no innocents *
damn, we're in a tight spot *
