earth day every day

i celebrated earth day in proper form yesterday, beginning with a giant pile of dirt first thing in the morning * i filled all the planter boxes i had (3 small & one large), dug up a strip of weeds along the north side of my place for a shade garden & covered it with dirt * by mid-afternoon i was exhausted & my muscles are so sore now it hurts to reach out for my smoothie! i can hardly imagine doing any more but i've barely made a dent in my pile * ah well, it's a good dilemma -- give me a day or two & i'll be rarin' to go again * i still have to put in a good garden spot to balance out all the flowers & bird-friendly areas * i've got to get my own salad veggies going if nothing else...

enjoying the rain

after a remarkably sunny March, April has been, well, living up to its reputation for showers * rain rain rain * i love it * okay so mostly i enjoy staying inside: here in front of my computer, glancing frequently out at the many birds on the feeders (3 brand new visitors this month!); in the kitchen making chicken by Sarah's incredible oven-fried chicken recipe (to die for -- i'm going to ask her if i can put it up) or using the Naked Chef's recipe for roasting; on the couch with my book or watching a movie...
i also enjoy going out with Pippin, as i will do as soon as i finish fussing with this or before it gets dark, whichever comes first (prolly the latter) * i'll even get to try my new -- bright red! -- rain pants out *

in other news, i just ordered a new computer! my current one has been scaring the pants (jammies, really -- i turn my computer on before i get dressed, now ain't i lucky?) off me by not wanting to start so i guess it's time... the new one ought to be lightning fast & much safer (with a back-up hard drive if you're a geek type -- 80GB each, holy cow!) * hopefully i can figure out what's wrong with this baby & use it as still more back-up * i'm excited for the new one & nervous about the old one lasting...
but now (i'm back from that walk i mentioned above, wonderful, wet, love the pants, love that river walk right downtown...) it's time for a Black Butte & a brand new copy of Master and Commander -- yummy (double yum) *

making lists: about this page

last updated 10 January 2004
the stunning movie The Pillow Book is the inspiration for this ever-evolving page of lists * there are lots of links mixed in on my lists -- if i could find a good link on any item, i included it * some links go straight to Amazon.com or the IMDb but watch that bottom status bar because there are some other great links hidden in there * if you're interested in a little history, follow the story behind this page on the one that came before it, otherwise, click on for more rambling words and lists of beloved things -- is that an oxymoron?
the lists below may look the same but they change every time i update the page * not all of them every time, but all of them over time * as it's a new year i'm going to give them another thorough going over, keep my mind moving on to new obsessions, even though i don't completely let go of the old ones *
the 2 spots at top i'll keep -- they're always changing & besides, they please me (i'm the only audience for these pages for all i know, so why not?) * my horrorscope: i'm a woo-woo type, part pagan, so why not revel in it? & the hotties in the movies: what's life without some tasty crushes? i try to keep the list short, but when i really fall for somebody it's usually because of a generous genuine nature & then i never want to take him&her off my list * like Viggo, like Salma * i saw the elvin Cate Blanchett on Inside the Actors Studio & wow... she said "It has to be a generous act" about really giving herself to a performance emotionally, going all out as she does * the generosity of creative expression is one of my favorite concepts, the one i've begun the last 2 years with (see Viggo for last year, & Brezsny for this) * see, it's all connected *

my horrorscope this week
(for the week of 22 April 2004):
Don't try to rob a bank this week, Aries. The astrological omens indicate you'd have a very low chance at succeeding, and besides, it's wrong. I also discourage you from buying hundreds of lottery tickets, selling your childhood collection of Barbie dolls or baseball cards, or wheedling your aging relatives into giving you your inheritance before they die. The cosmic forces are showing signs of coalescing in a way that will bring you financial gain. But in my opinion they'll only do so if you sit down and plot out a sensible, disciplined, ethical master plan.

angel cards i just drew:
grace    balance    peace

how am i doing?
i'm working on it! as i mentioned, i just ordered a new computer so if it's true that you have to spend money to make money then i should be well on my way! it also amuses me that last week's obsessions were entitled coming up with a plan * money has never been at the top of my mind, although obviously it rules a large part of our lives...
i have been feeling the grace, especially waking up from one of my recent lovely guidance dreams * i think the balance is coming back to me & with that certainly comes peace *

my favorite dream so far this month:
i went to a play of Return of the King with my folks * at the end when the forces of light had won, Gandalf "revealed his secret world" & the stage was flooded with light * the play was over with no curtain call & the audience was leaving quickly, including my family * i stood still, very touched by the light, almost paralyzed by the beauty of the concept & the vision * i saw Gandalf/Ian McKellen taking out the tape (a cassette tape!) that had played the music while he revealed his light * i didn't think it odd that such an important actor should be doing something so mundane because i knew that it was his tape, or Gandalf's really * he caught my eyes as i stood tranfixed & i ran toward him, knowing he would give me the tape * when i was close enough he tossed it to me & i caught it with both arms out, without looking away from his beautiful face which i saw was mottled & i wondered if it was make-up or age * he disappeared without a word & i felt a small regret that i hadn't gotten it autographed but it would've ruined the exchange, trapped him on the stage & not having it certainly didn't diminish the fact that this was the tape of Gandalf revealing his secret world * i went out, found the car & wasn't even startled to find a small white dog in my seat, i just sat in the middle *

my other favorite dream:
i had arranged for Viggo to give a workshop for a group of poet friends * i was waiting in the library with several of his poetry books, some so old & tattered that the pages were cumbling tearing thin * in one of the most well-loved books i was writing -- scribbling, scrawling, racing to keep up with the overflow of inspiration -- my own poems * some were poems, some was prose, all dreamy, driven * once i'd gotten them down i started over, writing some of them again more closely, slowly so that i could read them without halting when the workshop began * i saw Viggo before he arrived, saw him preparing his pile of gifts, personalized for each of us with old clippings & poems * he came just behind one of my friends & i did not hurry as i gave her a hug * i saw him jumping up & down behind her, as i'd known he would, with the never-failing thrill of poetry & i felt excitement gratitude calm * once she came in, turning to look at him for the first time, i fell into Viggo's open wide hug * i felt i could hug him as a friend, as a mentor returning & i felt him respond easily, sincerely, with pride * "it's an honour to be here," he said * i responded, "the honour is mine" *

my answers to those questions he always asks on Inside the Actors Studio are as follows (today):
  • my most favorite word is
  • my least favorite word is crash
  • what turns me on is camping
  • what turns me off is my failing computer
  • a sound i love is the nuthatch's funny little chirp
  • a sound i hate is my computer not starting
  • my favorite curse word is punk*ss
  • a profession other than my own that i would love to try is publishing
  • a profession i would hate to try is roofing
  • if i end up at the pearly gates & there is a god to greet me, i would want her to say, "there are a few people here i'd like you to meet"

animal friends:
ah, Pippin... what a handful! he's a pretty good pup but lately he's been exploring the far ends of the property & venturing out onto the neighboring property -- not good * mostly he comes when i call him but sometimes it takes a while *
& then there's Abby's cake!
luckily, he is very cute & he does make me laugh 'til i cry regularly *

lucky moment of the week:
this is a real simple one: i was watching Master and Commander, which arrived at my doorstep from Amazon.com on the very day it was s'posedly released (don't ask me how they do that), drinking a delicious Black Butte (i love beer) & snuggling with my pup when a wide smile suddenly spread across my face & i felt so lucky i laughed out loud & startled Pippin *

last time Pippin made me laugh 'til i cried:
we were at the Willamette Park & he was running around with a couple of other doggies * he was tearing around in the really tall grass, showing off, having a blast * suddenly i saw his back legs go straight up & over his invisible head, tail over teakettle * i couldn't help but laugh at the dramatic flip, couldn't even open my eyes to see he was okay (he's a puppy -- he has no bones!) but the owner of the other 2 dogs told me he was fine, "that was deliberate!" he quoted Gimli at me -- did i watch the Rings movies? ha!
the time before that was when he came tearing out of the bushes onto the same path so fast that his legs slid out from under him & he landed on his face with a startled look & a loud umph!
